Manuel de Pablos

Deputy Director-General for Economic and Social Sustainability, General Secretariat for Fisheries. Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. Government of Spain.

A veterinary graduate from the University of León and member of the National Veterinary Corps since 2008, Manuel de Pablos López has an extensive professional background in food safety, sustainability, and marine resource governance.

He began his research career at the University of León and has held various technical positions in the health and fisheries sectors, including Head of the Foreign Health Service at the Port of Vigo and Veterinary Health Alert Network Officer. From 2012 to 2017, he served as Counsellor for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Environment at the Permanent Mission of Spain to the United Nations, taking part in key negotiations on the 2030 Agenda, climate change, and oceans.

He later worked as Senior Adviser in the Cabinet of the General Secretariat for Fisheries, coordinating the institution’s technical and strategic activities. Since 2024, he has held the position of Deputy Director-General for Economic and Social Sustainability, promoting the integration of fisheries within the economic, social, and environmental sustainability goals.

He holds a Diploma in Public Health from the National School of Public Health and completed the Public Leadership Programme at IESE Business School.

Description

This session, organized by the General Secretariat for Fisheries of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, seeks to place fishing at the center of Spain's tourism, cultural, and territorial narrative. Through a multidisciplinary round table, fishing will be addressed not only as a productive activity, but also as living heritage, its role in shaping coastal towns, its gastronomic contribution, and its evolution towards sustainability. There will be a discussion on how to strengthen the link between the fishing and tourism sectors, with a special focus on sustainability, digitalization, and the promotion of fishing heritage as an experience, a history, and an identity.
