María del Mar Vázquez Agüero
Mayor of the City of Almería
Born in Almeria, she has a degree in Psychology from the University of Granada, an official master’s degree in Neuropsychology and Education from the International University of La Rioja (UNIR) and a university master’s degree in Teacher Training for Compulsory Secondary Education, Baccalaureate, Vocational Training and Language Teaching from the International University of Valencia (VIU).
Her professional experience pivots between private enterprise, where she developed her activity in the Quality and Training department of the main Andalusian hotel chain, Hoteles Playa, and public management, but, undoubtedly, her professional capacity is directly driven by her commitment, perseverance, optimism, and constructive spirit.
She began her political career in 2008 as Councillor for Tourism in the City Council of Almería and CEO of the Municipal Company Almería Turística. Since then, she has been deputy of Culture, Sports, and Youth in the Provincial Council of Almería; deputy mayor, spokesperson of the Government Team and councilor delegate of Economy in the City Council of Almería; first deputy mayor and councilor delegate of Presidency and Planning until becoming in September 2022 the first woman mayor of the city.

This roundtable discussion will bring together mayors from capital cities and large coastal municipalities to share their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities of the blue economy.
Topics for discussion will include tourism, sustainability, water management, ports, energy and biodiversity, and how each territory is responding to current challenges with innovative solutions adapted to the European context. This high-level political discussion is designed to highlight the diversity of approaches and commitment to a blue transformation led by municipalities.
