Javier Remiro
Coordinator of the Sustainable Blue Economy Area at Fundación Biodiversidad
My work at the Fundación Biodiversidad, f.s.p., primarily focuses on managing in-house projects like the Spanish Aquaculture Observatory and calls for grants related to the European Biodiversity Partnership, Biodiversa+, linked to Horizon Europe and co-financed by the European Commission, as well as the Pleamar Program, co-financed by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, for which Fundación Biodiversidad has served as an intermediate management body since 2013. This program aims to support the sustainability of fishing and aquaculture, improve the management of Marine Protected Areas, reduce and make use of marine and coastal waste, promote networking, and support environmental awareness.
Our area also supports other initiatives promoted by the Foundation in the marine field, such as the LIFE IP INTEMARES project, the blue employment line of the Empleaverde Program, co-financed by the European Social Fund (ESF+), and more recently, calls related to the Next Generation Funds in the fields of research focused on ecological transition, bioeconomy, circular economy, and urban renaturalization. I participate in various working groups related to marine strategies, the Natura 2000 Network, marine waste, and sustainable fishing and aquaculture.
My professional career began in 2002 in the field of research at the University of Geneva, where I had the opportunity to collaborate with the company Bayer CropScience. Upon returning to Spain, I completed my education with a master's degree focused on integrated management of quality, environment, occupational risk prevention, and corporate social responsibility, completing internships at the consulting firm PREMAC and the multinational British Petroleum. After this experience, I had the opportunity to deepen my knowledge of the aquaculture and fishing sectors at the public company Tragsatec, and in 2009, I was proposed as the general director of the Spanish Aquaculture Observatory Foundation, f.s.p., attached to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Environment, until its integration into Fundación Biodiversidad in 2015.
